Rebuilding The UNPLUGGED Network & Emphasis on Self-Care

Over the next couple months as we head into 2015, you might just notice a flurry of activity and some subtle changes taking place on the UNPLUGGED website and on my social media platforms.  So what’s the deal?  Well, I along with the support of a few phenomenal individuals are in the process of rebuilding the UNPLUGGED Network.

What’s The UNPLUGGED Network?? — It is a national network of women that exists to promote & increase awareness of self-care among women.

Why is this important? — Women truly are the backbone of our communities.  As frequently stated by Dr Vonda Wright, Founder of Women’s Health Conversations, women make more than 80% of the health care decisions in this country, not only for themselves, but also for everyone they touch in their lives (e.g children, spouses, parents, friends, co-workers).  Additionally, as once mentioned in a recent interview with Peter Buffett, “Girls and women invest 90 percent of what they earn back into their families and communities, while boys and men invest 40 percent.”  Thus, it is critically important, now more than ever, that women are taking care of themselves.

So what exactly is “Self-Care”? — You will probably hear and see a variety of definitions floating around.  I am a huge proponent of the way it is defined by World Health Health Organization (WHO);

Self -care is what people do for themselves to establish and maintain health, prevent, and with deal illness.”

It is truly a broad concept which encompasses many things. For example, personal hygiene, nutrition (type & quality of the food we eat), lifestyle habits, social habits, our living conditions, socioeconomic factors (income level, cultural beliefs, etc) and self-medication are all examples of self-care.

So What’s next? — The UNPLUGGED Signature Escape, in addition to a continued an overall emphasis on mental fitness will remain key aspects of The UNPLUGGED Network, however programs, activities, and initiatives that highlight other critical aspects of self-care in women will be integrated.  Thus, if you have taken the time to read this all the way to the end :-),  I hope you are intrigued enough to consider joining me on this journey.  I am personally inviting others who have a similar passion to promote self-care among women to become part of The UNPLUGGED Network. (Visit the website or stop by my Facebook page to JOIN THE NETWORK.  You can also feel free to email me your thoughts — I gladly welcome genuine feedback, but NO spam please) :-)

Together we CAN, Build the HEALTH of Communities…ONE Woman at a Time

 Happiest of Holidays and see you in 2015!
